Truth: men & flowers
Who knew I’d get calls for Father’s Day bouquets? Or that men would buy the bulk of my flowers?
The men in my flower world offer fascinating insights.
Big Jim, a former Desert Storm soldier turned CEO, was the first to sign up for my season flower pass in 2022, and he has returned yearly. “I have so much fun with these bouquets. I surprise different people with them each week. Getting flowers out of the blue makes people happy, which makes me happy.”
Heartless Halliburton, a bad ass superintendent I’ve known for about 30 years, digs the flourish of flowers too. While he doesn’t admit to liking them, he thrives on getting them because of the commotion created in the office. He stares down coworkers who want to know why and explains, “I’m just that nice.”
I showed up at his office with condolence flowers after the passing of his father, and he was quick on his feet. “I’m sooo glad you brought me flowers! It’s Sue’s birthday today, and now I have something to give her.” Beneath the banter, flowers keep this friend close at heart. (He truly isn’t heartless.)
Flower subscriptions keep me connected to a favorite construction industry founder who buys my flowers for his own enjoyment. He exemplifies how good taste can range from fresh flowers to fast cars.
Then there is the former business college dean who returns to Drift Farm for every floral season. He explains it like only a PhD economist can. “I really like your flowers, and I get points,” he says raising his eyebrows. He personally picks up the flowers he gives to his wife, handing them over with a grin.”
Ed, my chemist subscriber does the same. I’ll have to ask next time I see him if it involves chemistry.
Finally, there’s my husband, the speed skier and mortgage banker, who says, “I don’t even like flowers but I like YOUR flowers.” He puts in regular orders to share with people in his industry and bouquet for his mom. So guess who is getting flowers for Father’s Day?
